.kid is a generic top-level domain proposed by the European Parliament for websites designed for children, and would be monitored by an independent authority. This would be similar in concept to the US-specific .kids.us domain space (which is within the .us country code domain).
There have also been various applicants in the United States and Canada who have requested .kids as a top-level domain; so far, none of these proposals (other than second-level .kids.us) have come to fruition.
